Materials Used In Our Outdoor Gas Fires

Made in Sheffield England, our unique range of gas fire tables and gas fire bowls use only the finest quality outdoor materials including stainless steel, granite, ultra compact ceramics and glass. These materials are proven for use outdoors, providing the necessary resilience to weathering, UV and accidental spills, whilst requiring minimal annual maintenance.

In a world of mass production not many companies can deliver such a variety of designs, with such a huge colour combination, attention to detail, and customer service. We are proud to say Rivelin can.

“The moment you sit around a Rivelin Gas Fire Table, you know you’ve made the right choice.”

 Base Material and Colour

Based within Sheffield, the home of stainless steel, our fire table bases are predominantly made from Stainless Steel. These fire table bases are available in their raw steel state or can be powder coated, delivering a huge range of colour options. In addition to stainless steel, we also manufacture gas fire table bases from COR-TEN steel, another material designed for the outdoors.

Rivelin's Powder Coat Range

Rivelin only use a specially formulated outdoor architectural powder coat finish on its gas fire tables and gas fire bowls. Designed with outstanding durability against the weather and UV, powder coats are available on all Rivelin models.

Rivelin’s powder coat range includes:

  1. Midnight Black
  2. Anthracite Grey
  3. Chalk White
  4. Mocha Brown
  5. Aged COR-TEN Effect
  6. Champagne

Colour Match Service

We understand that sometimes you require a specific RAL colour. With this in mind, we offer a RAL colour match service. We can arrange for a powder coat to be made to our high architectural standards in a custom RAL colour of your choice.

Stainless Steel Finishes

Stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion and staining, low maintenance, and familiar lustre make it an ideal material for many outdoor applications.  Also known as Inox from the French inoxydable, stainless steel’s corrosion resistance is due to the presence of a thin chromium oxide film which forms on the surface of the steel.  Rivelin use various grades of stainless steel including 304 and 316 marine grade stainless steel, and apply various finishes to the steel depending on its application.

Brushed Stainless Steel

Brushing of stainless steel is a mechanical process which adds a “grain” to the metals surface. Considered a decorative effect, Rivelin use a brushed effect on all visible bare metal surfaces unless a polishing process is requested. This brushing process would normally be performed on 304 and 316 marine grade stainless steel.

Electropolished Stainless Steel

There are a number of benefits to electropolishing stainless steel. It provides a smoother, more reflective surface that reduces product adhesion making it easier to clean. It also dissolves free iron, inclusions, and embedded particles from the surface of the bowl, enhancing the chromium/nickel content for the most superior form of passivation for stainless steel – promoting the formation of an improved corrosion resistant surface layer.

Mirror polished Stainless Steel

Mirror polishing involves grinding, buffing, and finally polishing. The effect is two fold, a bright mirror appearance on your fire table and improved corrosion resistance. Polishing can be used to enhance the appearance of a Valencia gas fire bowl.

Weathering steel, best-known as COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting, by forming a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years.

Very fashionable, Rivelin have been commissioned to make a number of its gas fire tables from COR-TEN creating that rustic charm. The table base would normally take on a rusted appearance over a number of years, unfortunately this is normally unacceptable. The table base is therefore pre-aged for a period of time before despatch by the repeated wetting and drying of the table bases surface. The process of ageing is unpredictable, creating lighter and darker areas and even run marks, all within what can be described as a natural appearance.Rust stains on surrounding hard standing surfaces created by run off from the COR-TEN can also be a problem until the COR-TEN surface settles down after about 2 years.

If you like the COR-TEN colour, but are looking for something more predictable Rivelin offer a COR-TEN powder coat effect, negating all the problems outlined above.

Table Top Options

For our table tops, only hard wearing and low maintenance granite and zero maintenance ultra compact ceramics are used, offering a wide palette including neutral colours and ensuring years of enjoyment with minimal annual maintenance, despite the weather, UV and the odd spill.

From nature, we selected granite because of its beauty, durability and increased UV stability over marble, and other natural materials. From man made materials, we selected an ultra compact ceramic product which is both beautiful, very hard wearing, UV stable and available in a range of colours and textures.

The choice is ultimately yours.

Granite Table Tops

Granite has been mined and used for thousands of years and evidence of it’s durability exists in ancient Egyptian and Roman structures which still stand strong thousands of years after their construction.

Granite is made of several different minerals and each has a different hardness. Granite is crystalline in nature and has small pockets between the mineral crystals that make up granite. The table tops are made entirely of natural rock and therefore will always have slight pits, cracks and other imperfections. The pits do not make the granite less durable or otherwise inferior, and do not in themselves qualify a table top for replacement. Pits are common in all granites and should be expected when dealing with Natural Stone. These natural imperfections in the rock are what gives granite most of it’s beauty.

Rivelin carry two granite table tops as standard, Polished Nero and Tornado Grey. Both can be finished to a high standard and require minimal maintenance. However, we have used other granites when requested. If you have a specific granite in mind or you like the look of one of our past products please feel free to contact us.

Assembling a Granite Top

All granites vary in strength. Some are fine grained and some have coarse grains within them. When processing the table tops, we have to use different types of joints for the down stands on the granite, depending on the granite type. The three types of joint are outlined below and classed as a fully mitred top, half-mitred top and a butt-joint top.

As granite is a natural material, the patterns and colours are unique on every tabletop. If you wish to have a uniform pattern, pit and crack free, then a ceramic tabletop may be a better option for you.

Ceramic Table Tops

Our high-quality ultra compact ceramic tops are precision made using the most advanced technology available. They are non-porous and produced through a sintering process. The sintering process mimics and speeds up the metamorphic change that natural stone undergoes when subjected to high temperatures and pressure over thousands of years.

These 20mm thick tops are UV, stain, abrasion, heat and cold resistant and so are perfect for use on tables installed outdoors.

Ceramic is easy to clean and requires little maintenance, preserving its beauty for decades. It is a great choice for those who like a uniform, modern and clean design.
